Open Course - Immunity and Infection

Competence Centre: Life Sciences

Degree Code:
University Code: 1300
09 to 13 July, 2012

Degree Director:
Ana Margarida Aires Alves Vigário

This short-term course aims to complement and update the trainees’ knowledge regarding fundamental concepts of the immune response.

The Biology programs taught in the secondary schools have gradually been updated; there has been the introduction of further development of certain areas such as immunology. On the other hand, the way how our body defends us from infections is something that stimulates a great deal of interest and curiosity in advanced level students.

Immunology is a very new science that has evolved greatly in recent years, requiring a constant updating. In addition, many secondary school teachers who teach these subjects had no specific training in this area.

For the reasons given above, the updating of teachers who teach this field of knowledge is quite relevant.

Competences

This course aims to:

Provide all the trainees with in-depth knowledge regarding the components of the immune system.

All the trainees must be aware of the entire process of recognition and fight, by the immune system, to a viral infection after the entry of the bacteria into the human body.

To be aware and knowing how to interpret the evaluation methods of the immune response more commonly used in health, namely Flow Cytometry and ELISA.
