Open Course - Integrated Control of Mice

Competence Centre : Life Sciences

Degree Code:
University Code: 1300
13 May to 09 June

Degree Director:
José Manuel Abreu de Jesus

In many places of the world mice and little mice are major plagues. In economic terms the murine species can be very harmful causing considerable losses due to the amount of grain they eat or destroy. They pose a serious threat to public health as mice are carriers of diseases such as leptospirosis and the Lyme disease; they also cause severe damage to the habitat where they are introduced, at it is happens to some bird species in the Madeira ecosystem. Therefore, it is important to carry out its control. Their eradication is possible and in some small islands with the resources currently available it is even feasible. Usually, the murine control is problematic and the eradication is surreal. Even on islands with the dimension, soil and diversity of habitats similar to those of Madeira Island is pure nonsense to talk about eradication and the control is not easy. In order to be efficient it will be required an integrated approach that shall include environmental manipulation, biological control, mechanical exclusion, the use of rat poison, population acculturation and so on. In a control program the monitoring of target and non-target species is very important and may contribute decisively to the reduction of ecological, health-care and economic costs.

After working hours (Fridays from 06:00 pm onwards and saturdays).

To provide students with the tools required for the identification of rodents, especially the most abundant species in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

To inform the students about important aspects of the murine biology, namely ecology, distribution, behaviour and reproduction.

To make known the main effects of rodent plagues at economic, environmental and public health levels.

To mention and show the main procedures for rodent control encompassed in an integrated strategy for plague control, with reference not only to direct measures, but also to indirect measures, such as cultural and environmental measures of plague control.

To show the main monitoring forms of the population subject to control and the non-target species.
